The Sycamore is 160 years old, the oldest tree in Malibu and in danger of being chopped down for the left turn lane of the new Whole Foods complex.  A total of 3 feet is all it encroaches on the developer's plans.  Also to go are a whole row of very old Eucalyptus trees along PCH.  I sat on the ground in the Sycamore's glorious shade and painted it.  I was moved by its soft leaves under me, the beauty of it's branches above me and the cool breezes on a very hot day.

Earlier in the day I had painted the Malibu Lagoon. After I finished I felt called by the Sycamore, packed up my stuff and walked over the bridge to Cross Creekto paint the Sycamore while it was still there.

I would love to have some comments on how anyone feels about the different styles and emotions in these two paintings.  When I put them next to each other it doesn't seem possible they were painted the same day.

Just returned from the most amazing 2 and a half month trip.  We started out on the Seabourn Quest and did 14 days of transatlantic, nothing but water everywhere!  We made one stop in Madeira (Have some Madeira, M'Deara, it's oh so much nicer than beer a)  Funchal on Madeira is lovely and the flowers were gorgeous.  We then went on to Barcelona, Gaudi, and from there a train to Nimes to get a river cruise of the south of France. Avignon, Arles etc.  So much fun and so beautiful.  We decided to spend a few days in Paris and ran into Bethan and Pete so were able to spend a lovely evening and dinner with them. We spent a day with Mary Blake, an artist friend I hadn't seen in about 40 years.  She is painting and living in Montmartre.  Lovely time in Paris.  Spent a lot of time in the D'Orsay gorgeous and then to the horrific Frank Geary blight The Louis Vuitton Foundation.   As ridiculous pretentious and arrogant as it sounds.  Then the train to Zurich and on to Vienna.  We were to go from there to Russia for a 2 week river cruise from Moscow to St. Petersburg but it didn't work out, last minute bait and switch.  We stayed in Vienna and had the best time.  Saw La Boheme at the Volksoper in German lots of museums, and found a house we fell in love with in Gloggnitz.  Keith was in Brussels filming and had some time off so came and spent 4 days with us and in the rain we recreated the 3rd man and went to all the locations we could find, saw the remaining Klimt's and just had a really terrific time.  Then a surprise Kristen Aspervig arrived with her family and we had two lovely meals with them.  Plus the joy of being with Henry and Karina, one dinner at the Ille's in multiple languages. museums and coffee with Patricia and 2 spectacular concerts of Karina's.  Karina and Henry had us over  when Keith was there, fixed dinner and performed some beautiful house music for us.  Such a lovely time, we hated to leave.  I fell in love with the blackbird "Max" who returned from last year to sing every morning and evening on our stairs. We formed a bond and he would come when I whistled for him.

 Three days before we left so did he.  He was old and had only one leg at the end.  I will miss him terribly.

Still basking in the happiness of this past week.
The reception on Feb 17 was everything and more than I could have hoped for. 110 Friends and family there with so much love and support. Also the press and the mayor of Calabasas along with board members and supporters of the Adobe. The paintings were presented beautifully.  The weather was glorious.  The venue was the best ever.  The Adobe where there were three of my paintings with all the period furniture. The Plummer House where the Lent project with all the Mission paintings in one large glass case and the other 19 Plein Air paintings around the room on the walls.  The food and wine was beautifully presented and served and the grounds like stepping back in time, with the barn and baby lambs and horses, chickens.  Fairy lights in the trees.  It was beautiful and the people who were there were wonderful.
Saturday afternoon (yesterday) was the public opening and apparently if you googled things to do it was listed in first place. I was told this by a man who brought his two children.  It was very crowded,  at least 130 people one of the docents told me.  We have almost sold out of the books and the 240 notecards that I made and signed.  I was kept quite busy signing books.
Phew I don't remember when I have felt so much validation and love.  Thank you everyone who was there.  If you haven't seen it you have till June 28.
I am overwhelmed and feeling so much gratitude.  I have to mention Diane Ramadan who believed in me and made this all possible.  Thank you Diane, who is also an artist when she isn't running things at the Adobe.

Back in Los Angeles after a heavenly month in Vienna.
Now for some really exciting news.  My Lent Project 2014 was chosen by the museum at the Leonis Adobe for a show in it's entirety.  40 pieces plus 3 others they want.  I have also done a book and notecards for their giftshop.
The big press party and catered reception, invitation only, will be on Feb 17 and then on the 21 will be the public opening.  It will run until June 28.
I am so happy and feel so honored!!  I am on cloud 9 at the moment.

The exhibit will open on Saturday, February 21st, from 2:00-5:00 p.m. and will run until June 28, 2015.  Titled “Lent Project 2014”, the exhibit represents the 40 original oil paintings of California Missions and historic landscapes from Sonoma to San Diego, painted daily by Carolyn Carradine during the 40 days of Lent, in 2014. “My work is personal and comes from my heart”, Carolyn explains. “It concerns my life and emotions good or bad, pain or joy. If my art takes the viewer to another place and makes them think about or imagine the story, one that they can enjoy and relate to, I have succeeded.” In addition to her talent as an artist in oil, watercolor and other mediums, Carolyn is also a recognized film, theatrical and television actress. She is known for her roles in “The Dream Chasers” (1982), “The End” (1978) and “The Sting II” (1983). Carolyn appeared in television series “Columbo” and “Alfred Hitchcock Presents”.  Carolyn conceived the “Lent Project 2014” as a Plein Air experience, visiting and painting one mission a day with no “do overs” or corrections. She visited each of the 21 California Missions, and filled in the remaining 19 days of Lent with California landscapes. The 40 Plein Air paintings are all framed similarly, but in a variety of colors.  “California Missions and their history is part of the fourth grade curriculum in local schools, and students regularly visit Leonis Adobe for field trips to learn about California ranch life in the late 1880’s” says Diane Ramadan, Executive Director. “With Carolyn Carradine’s art exhibit at Leonis Adobe, they will now be able to see paintings of all of the missions in one location.” The Carradine family has an interesting connection to Leonis Adobe ranch from the past. During the years from 1955 to 1960, Carolyn’s husband Chris, his brothers and father, film actor John Carradine, actually lived at Leonis Adobe.
